Viewing and Annotating Articles Within EndNote

In addition to formatted citations, you can store entire articles in EndNote. You can directly annotate articles within EndNote using their highlighter, text box, and underline tools.

 

  •  To annotate a PDF within EndNote, first select the reference you want to annotate. You will know there’s an attached PDF when there is a paperclip icon in the reference.

 

 

  • Click the “open this reference” button (square with an arrow).

 

 

  • Click the annotation toolbar icon (paper with a pencil).

 

 

  • To highlight text, select the text you want to highlight, click the button with the pencil and "ab" and then you can change the color of the highlighter by using the color spectrum bar drop-down arrow.

 

 

  • To underline text, highlight the text you want to underline, click the button that is an underlined U and then you can change the color of the underline by using the color spectrum bar drop-down arrow.

 

 

  • To strikeout text, highlight the text you want to strikeout, click the button that is a T with a line through the middle of it (strikeout) and then you can change the color of the strikeout by using the color spectrum bar drop-down arrow.

 

 

  • To add a comment to text, highlight the text you want to add a comment to, click the button that is a chat box and then you can change the color of the comment by using the color spectrum bar drop-down arrow.

 

 

  • The comment box will appear on the right side of the document. To edit the text within the comment box, double click the comment box and then a text editor pop-up will appear where you can type your comment. Once you are done, click the X on the top left of the pop-up box to close the comment.

 

 

 

  • You can also create colored boxes to appear around text or images within the PDF. Click on the button that is an outline of a box and then draw the box where you would like it. You can change the color of the box by using the color spectrum bar drop-down arrow.

 

 

  • To save your changes, close the annotation pop-up box by clicking the red X in the top left corner and select Save. Your annotations will be stored in EndNote.
