Welcome to the R Tutorial

R is a free open source language and software environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is similar to the S language and environment developed by Bell Laboratories (formerly AT&T, now Lucent Technologies) by John Chambers and colleagues. R provides a variety of statistical and graphical techniques. One strength of R is the ease to create plots that are publication-quality with mathematical symbols and formula when necessary. R compiles and runs on multiple UNIX platforms, Windows, and MacOS.

The R environment includes:

  • effective data handling and storage
  • a host of operators for calculations on arrays (e.g., matrices)
  • collection of intermediate data analyses tools
  • graphical functions for data analysis that can be displayed either on-screen or hardcopy
  • a simple programming language that includes conditionals, loops, user-defined recursive functions and input and output facilities
