Augmentative and Alternative Communication
Individuals with communication disorders may require the use of specific assistive technologies known as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). AAC can be defined as methods of expression to facilitate communication in place of speech and writing. There are two forms of AAC:
- Unaided System - Does not require the use of a device to effectively communicate. The most common example of an Unaided AAC System is American Sign Language.
- Aided System - A device is used to facilitate communication. Examples of this include Picture Exchange, symbol based communication (i.e. Boardmaker Links to an external site.), and digital AAC Devices such as the GoTalk 20+ pictured on this page, or more advanced devices like Dynavox Links to an external site. and the Proloquo2Go Links to an external site. app for iPad (demonstrated in the video below). The symbols on these devices can be changed to meet the needs of the individual using the device.
